Distinguished religious leaders will lend moral
legitimacy and urgency to the agenda of the Special Session, and will issue a
joint declaration of religious committments for children. Participants will
emphasize the need for concerted and concrete action and challenge both governments and
religious communities to increase their efforts to ensure the well-being of all
the world's children.
This closed meeting will bring together for the first time independent
national institutions established to monitor, promote and protect the human
rights of children across the world. A variety of organizations that share a
common purpose in promoting the fullest implementation of the Convention on the
Rights of the Child will participate. A final statement will be issued.

of Child Soldiers
The event will highlight the recruitment of child soldiers as one of the more lasting and destructive effects of war. The panel will feature the Secretary-General, a former child soldier and several high-level UN speakers. A short film on disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration activities will be shown. Participants will include government and NGO delegates to the Special Session, youth delegates, and media. The event is open to all participants. The main organizers are the OSRSG for Children and Armed Conflict and UNICEF, with support from NGOs.

Going
Forward – Regional approaches. NGO representatives will pinpoint government
and NGO commitments at the regional and national levels. They will discuss how local and regional NGOs
can work with partners and governments to develop and monitor national plans of
action.
A
new way forward in defining the issue of quality education is to view it
through a broader lens, involving at least five dimensions: what learners
bring, content, processes, environments and learning outcomes. This panel will bring together speakers who will
advocate for specific aspects of quality in basic education by reviewing best
practices. The event will consist of short statements by speakers followed by a

Affected by HIV/AIDS: The Way Forward
This panel
discussion is organised by UNICEF, USAID and the International Federation of
the Red Cross. It will highlight the emerging global consensus on programming
principles and action strategies for achieving the global goals for children
affected by HIV/AIDS, in order to challenge delegates – particularly
governments - to accelerate their responses.

of this panel discussion, organised by UNESCO and UNICEF, is to launch the
global strategy framework on HIV/AIDS preventive education, increase commitment
to achieving the goal agreed to during the Special Session on HIV/AIDS, and
create an expanded network of committed political decision-makers.
