Invitation to attend the “International Forum for Stakeholders on Street Children and Street Work”, Brussels, 25-28 November 2002

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

I have the pleasure to invite you to the “International Forum for Stakeholders on Street Children and Street Work”, to be held on 25-28 November 2002 in Brussels and which is jointly organised by the European Network on Street Children Worldwide (ENSCW) and Dynamo (a major Belgian mobile youth work organisation).

This innovative Forum will bring together relevant stakeholders involved in the issue of street and excluded children in order to raise public awareness and call for political attention and commitment. In particular, it will call on the European Union for a global and concerted plan of action to improve the situation of street children and to support them to enjoy their rights in Europe and all over the world.

The International Forum builds upon the experiences of two projects carried out by ENSCW (“Satellite Street Children Project”) and Dynamo (“Action Research Project”) in the last two years and involving NGOs working with street children and children at risk in more than 40 countries. Both aim at improving the practical performance of work with street children, to embed this work in a wider setting to avoid social exclusion and to ask public and political attention for the most vulnerable citizen in the world: street children.

Based on field experience of social workers and facts about street children all over the world, the Forum intends:

-         To take stock of the measures already adopted by the EU and increase the visibility of what has been achieved until now with regard to children in difficult circumstances

-         To provide policy-makers with examples of promising practices directly linked to the expertise of field actors and with recommendations

-         To raise public awareness about the situation of street children in and outside Europe.

The Forum is divided into two parts:

-         the first part from 25 to 27 November aims at formulating recommendations by field actors and other involved stakeholders, includes a series of workshops on important themes concerning street children and street work, as well as cultural and social events. The event is to be held in Le Flagey building.

-         on Thursday 28 November a Public Session will be held within the premises of the European Parliament and will involve representatives of the European Union, International Organisations and other relevant stakeholders.

For your information, I enclose a preliminary leaflet on the International Forum and the latest Programme of the Forum’s Public Session.
